Outside my kitchen window I see medium-rise council flats with parking bays choc-a-bloc full of wanted wheels. Not a junkyard johnny in sight. There’s a couple of XJ Jags, one silver grey, the other in burgundy red. Ford Capris rule, including a sleek John Player Special sporting its fag-pack racing colours. Jet-black body, gold pinstriping, four fat gold spokes on each wheel.
Last week an indefinite moratorium was declared on all local unpaid council rents, many going back a year and more. This week I receive a pay or be jailed within 28 days notice, demanding a year’s worth of rates. I’d been saving up for another Cuthbert - the red second-hand MG Midget dad bought me for my university days. No chance of that now.
A couple get into the JPS Capri. Through the closed window the motor roars into life.
